What You Need to File
If you have any of the following, be sure to let us know.
Do you have non-US bank accounts
You may have FATCA compliance filings due if your total holdings in aggregate (both cash and securities) total USD10k or more during the year.
Are you a shareholder in any non-US business
You may have to disclose the financials of this corporation if you own 10% or more.
Do you have a cash-growth health or life insurance policy
Your policy may qualify as a Passive Foreign Investment Company, an annual filing requirement; or it may require quarterly excise tax reporting.
Did you give or receive gifts during the year?
If you made a gift worth USD $19,000 or over, you will need to file a gift return. If you received a gift worth 100k or more, you will need to disclose the gift, even though no tax is likely due. These thresholds differ if received from a related party of a foreign business.
Did you gain or surrender US residency/citizenship during the year?
If you were not a resident or nonresident for the whole year, your filing requirement looks different as a dual-status filer.
Are you invested in any mutual funds or private retirement vehicles?
You may need to disclose a Passive Foreign Investment Company, and in rare cases a foreign trust.
